It is our current policy not to authorize fax or phone prescriptions to online pharmaceutical warehouses including Pet Meds for prescription products.
- Drug company manufacturers have informed us they do not sell products to any internet pharmacy warehouse. Therefore online warehouses obtain products through illegal or unethical channels. Though labeled and marketed as standard prescription medications these items may not be identical products.
- Many of these warehouses are NOT federally regulated pharmacies and do not have licensed pharmacists trained in drug handling and storage. They are staffed with customer service personnel only.
- Federal and state regulatory agencies have taken legal action against PetMeds for selling misbranded Advantage products and for “illegal distribution of drugs and fraud”.
- Drug company manufacturers do not guarantee their products and will not provide complementary treatment for patients who develop problems while on any medications dispensed from an online pharmacy warehouse.
We feel this policy is in the best interests of our patients and helps ensure appropriate medications are used to maintain their health.
If you choose to seek out products from another source, we will write a prescription. By law we are required to have a valid patient/doctor relationship to write a prescription. This means your pet will need to have had an exam by a veterinarian at our facility within 6 – 12 months to obtain to a prescription.
Additionally please note that if your animal is on heartworm preventative obtained from an online pharmacy, we require them to be heartworm tested every year.
