Ophthalmology
Just as humans struggle with eye problems, so do pets. However, pets can’t leave with a new pair of trendy glasses, so their eyes must be kept healthy. Certain breeds of cats and dogs are more prone to eye issues than others. If you sense your pet has an eye infection or another problem, consult your veterinarian.
Symptoms of Pet Vision Problems
While your pet can’t tell you their eyes are bothering the, you can look for symptoms like:
- Dry eyes that seem to itch
- Avoiding light, especially in bright areas
- Keeping their eyes closed no matter the brightness of the room
- Cloudiness or redness in or around the eyes
- Excess tears that are clear, yellow, white, or green
- Rubbing their eyes or face constantly
Top Eye Problems for Pets
Symptoms like those listed above are relatively common and are not exclusive to a specific vision problem, minor or severe. Our veterinarians are trained to treat a range of more severe eye disease, including:
- Cataracts: Cloudy or white eyes are signs of cataracts. If left untreated, cataracts can lead to blindness or be a sign of an underlying illness such as diabetes.
- Corneal damage: Pets can damage their cornea by scratching their eye, getting poked by a branch or getting dirt in them while outside. You can identify corneal damage by irritating redness and excessive tearing.
- Glaucoma: These diseases of the eye can happen if fluid does not drain properly, causing extreme pressure. It can be painful for your pet, resulting in redness, tearing, dilation, cloudiness, or bulging of the eye.
- Cherry eye: If the ligaments of your dog’s third eyelid weaken, a red, cherry-like piece may be visible from the corner of their eye. Cherry eye may need surgery to repair.
- Conjunctivitis: People can get pink eye, and so can pets. Like human conjunctivitis, your pet can experience redness, gooey eye discharge, and inflammation caused by a viral or bacterial infection.
